TWO HOURS CAN BE A LONG TIME
There is still time left to show your #bigHEARTED support for #MyWestmead and help us raise vital funds for health care services and medical research.
Nearly 6000 babies are born at Westmead Hospital and approximately 27 per cent of their mums require a caesarean section...Westmead Hospital midwives started a program that allows the newborn to be placed on its mother’s chest within five minutes of delivery. Previously these mums were separated from their baby for two hours until they were brought together on the ward...Holding the baby skin-to-skin enhances maternal behaviours and confidence in caring. It also protects the babies from the negative effects of separation and supports optimal brain development...Since the implementation of this practice, babies born at less than 32 weeks’ gestation at Westmead Hospital have shown an average golden hour temperature of 36.9C degrees.
