In memory of our beautiful and generous son MATTHEW, Lyn & Chris Martin have established the Matthew Martin Time Out Trust Fund with Westmead Medical Research Foundation. The Fund is open to all ages and to patients currently undergoing cancer treatment. The Fund provides grants up to $5,000 and enables the recipient to make their dreams a reality - go on a holiday;climb the bridge;go to a concert;buy a computer etc.
Our aim is to give them a break from treatment (Time Out) and from the enormous emotional journey they are travelling. It is like “Make a Wish Foundation’ but on a smaller scale.
If you know of someone who can benefit from the Fund please let me know. Donations of course are always welcome.
Matthew was diagnosed with melanoma at 20. He had had a wide circle of loyal friends and was deeply loved by his family. He was on the road to completing his apprenticeship which he loved. He was an all-round sportsman and represented Macarthur District in both cricket and soccer. Skateboarding was his favourite love.
Matthew's motto throughout his illness was "Through Adversity To The Stars".
Matthew's cancer returned in September 2008. Prior to this, Matthew had organised a trip to Cairns with his mates and, despite a series of tests, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, he still desperately wanted to go.
The young man who had struggled to get his luggage on the baggage trolley returned smiling, happy, and most of all with renewed spirit to fight his illness.
Matthew never gave up hope, even when the melanoma had metastised and spread to his lungs, liver, brain and spine. Three weeks after his trip to Cairns, Matthew lost his battle with cancer.
Donations to the Matthew Martin Time Out Trust Fund are tax deductible.
FUND UPDATE. So far several holidays have been granted, including a trip to Europe.
On 13/11/2013 Matthew's Fund was officially recognised in Parliament. The Legislative Council with thanks to Charlie Lynn, Parliamentary Secretary for Veterans Affairs, officially acknowledged the Matthew Martin Time Out Trust Fund and WMRF. There will now remain a permanent record that Matthew Martin lived and generously contributed to his community.
